World Digital Library  Site Reviews(1)
Mission The World Digital Library (WDL) makes available on the Internet, free of charge and in multilingual format, significant primary materials from countries and cultures around the world. The principal objectives of the WDL are to: * Promote international and intercultural understanding; * Expand the volume and variety of cultural content on the Internet; * Provide resources for educators, scholars, and general audiences; * Build capacity in partner institutions to narrow the digital divide within and between countries. This Site The WDL makes it possible to discover, study, and enjoy cultural treasures from around the world on one site, in a variety of ways. These cultural treasures include, but are not limited to, manuscripts, maps, rare books, musical scores, recordings, films, prints, photographs, and architectural drawings. Items on the WDL may easily be browsed by place, time, topic, type of item, and contributing institution, or can be located by an open-ended search, in several languages. Special features include interactive geographic clusters, a timeline, advanced image-viewing and interpretive capabilities. Item-level descriptions and interviews with curators about featured items provide additional information. Navigation tools and content descriptions are provided in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Many more languages are represented in the actual books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and other primary materials, which are provided in their original languages. The WDL was developed by a team at the U.S. Library of Congress, with contributions by partner institutions in many countries; the support of the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and the financial support of a number of companies and private foundations.

Advocate  Site Reviews(0)
I founded Advocate in 1992 with a group of illustrators who liked the idea of having an agent but not the other things that often came with that. It started out similar to an artists’ co-operative but grew quickly into a sales, marketing, legal, accounting, promotional, art management, web hosting office. We call our ethos “four f.a.c.t.’s” Fairness Ability Creativity and Trust, it’s about doing the right thing and being with the right people. We think our principles set us apart from conventional agencies, sticking to them has meant we have attracted the most creative illustrators and artists who in turn attract (with a little help) the best clients. The people we represent are perfectly able to conduct their own affairs but like working with Advocate because we offer value to them in the services we provide. It’s their choice to be with us, we have a high retention rate, most of the most popular artists in our group have been with us from the start What we don’t do is take control away from artists, we operate what we call a “transparent system”. Of course we allow direct contact with our artists and illustrators thus allowing creativity to flow without being diluted in translation. We also go beyond that too, treating artist and clients like the business partners they are. Business is all about relationships and we understand that often it is very important after the initial introduction for us to stand aside, only acting to assist if called upon. We can also pool together several artists for larger projects, almost as if we are a design agency, supplying formatted work, scanned and ready to go from say 30 artists at a time. We understand that it is important not to specialise in one art buying industry. By having a handle on multiple markets our artists and Advocate can carry over fresh perspectives and new ideas from one to another. Besides doing different projects makes life more interesting. Artists and clients benefit from being more exclusive with certain companies enabling them to find “a home”. Being everywhere can dilute an artist’s “special-ness” in the eyes of retailers, advertising agencies or publishers. So it is important that artists are not oversold in one industry, but diversify into as many art markets as possible! We supply illustration to book publishers, design and advertising agencies, greeting card and fine art publishers, wrapping paper and bag companies, ceramic manufacturers and potteries, and editorial illustrations for newspaper and magazines- whatever needs imagery, pub signs to mobile phone content. We have an on-line library which contains 50,000 images and helps us facilitate the very active re-licensing side of our business, generating a very important secondary income for our artists and giving clients the opportunity to get art fast. We are also experienced in building artists or their creations into brands and take exhibition space at the major brand shows - NY Licensing Show and Brand Licensing London.

Standard Initiative on the Environment and Substainability  Site Reviews(0)
Sustainability is a phrase that is bandied about frequently and at times it is hard to determine if an adequate definition exits. Stanford University is intimately concerned with this subject, and they recently created the Initiative of the Environment and Sustainability to deal with questions raised by this phrase and other such thorny areas of inquiry. On their site, they pose this query which will give visitors to the site pause: *Can we adequately meet current human needs while protecting and restoring planetary life support systems for the welfare of people today and generations to come?* A good way to start browsing through the site is by clicking on one of their four primary areas, which are represented by small graphic symbols that read *Energy & Climate*, *Fresh Water*, *Land Use & Conservation* and *Oceans & Estuaries*. Perhaps one of the most intriguing sections of the site is *Sustainability at Stanford* area, where visitors can learn what initiatives they are working on at their own campus in Palo Alto. Water*s Journey Everglades Currents of Change [Macromedia Flash Player, pdf] Understanding the ecological history and operation of the Everglades is complicated, and when one considers the role that humans play in its transformation, things get even more complex. This website, created by Karst Productions (with substantial support from the Florida Department of Agriculture and the South Florida Water Management District) does a nice job of bringing web users a wealth of information about the history and contemporary situation in and around this massive area. Clicking on the *Begin Your Journey* link brings up an interactive map of south Florida that contains conceptual animations of the Everglades water flow before human impact, the current water flow, and the planned flow after the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CREP) is completed. Visitors should then proceed to the Everglades Historical Timeline, which tracks the earliest human interventions into the area all the way up to the present day through photographs and other primary documents. Finally, a splendid section of educational resources offers lesson plans, teaching modules, and other such material.
